AMHERST — Intermittent closures of the Norwottuck Rail Trail from Station Road in Amherst to Warren Wright Road in Belchertown are beginning Friday and will run through June 5.

The periodic closures, which will necessitate detours, were announced by the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation to accommodate a state Department of Transportation trail improvement project.

When the trail is off limits, detours will be clearly marked, according to a DCR advisory.

In addition, on Friday, the Station Road parking area will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For those who need parking to access the Norwottuck Rail Trail, lots will remain open on Mill Lane in Amherst, on Railroad Street in Hadley and at Elwell Recreation Area in Northampton.
