GRANBY – The Smith Vocational wrestling team narrowly beat host Granby, 31-30, Thursday night for its second dual-meet victory of the season.

Just one of the six matches the Vikings claimed came via forfeit, including Robert Slysz pinning Granby’s Tyler Quist in 1 minute, 27 seconds during the 165-pound match.

“To me the biggest win today was at 165, Robert [Slysz],” Smith Voc head coach Josh Bialek said. “He’s not feeling very well and he made a comeback and won by pin. If he did not win that match we would’ve lost. That comeback was huge.”

Matt Small (138 pounds) and Logan Hawley (126 pounds) also earned wins via pin for the Vikings, while Mateo Henriques (132 pounds) and Jesse Boudreau (144 pounds) won via decision for the victors.

“I thought it’d be close but not quite this close,” Bialek said. “I thought we were, not going to wipe the mat with them because they have some good guys and stuff like that, but I thought we outnumbered them, personally. Some matches we were winning then got flopped to our backs, which happens. We’re still young in the game and still trying to get through the season.”

For Granby, Parker Dufresne (157 pounds) and Richard Sweet (190 pounds) earned wins by pin. The Rams got three more matches in their favor by forfeit, keeping Smith Voc from running away with it.

“L ast week we actually tied with my old high school, Springfiel d International, but I couldn’t be prouder,” Granby head coach Anthony Delvalle said. “It’s one of those things where you go in, OK these kids are looking tough, and all of a sudden we give them a run for their money. I was just telling one of the dad’s here, I couldn’t have asked for any more.”

Both teams’ next dual meet is next Wednesday. Smith Voc will travel to Springfield International, while Granby will head to Frontier.
