HADLEY — Throughout the first 75 minutes of action, the No. 2 Hopkins Academy girls soccer team was knocking on the doorstep. The Golden Hawks had attempted nearly 30 shots, but they had no goals to show for against visiting No. 7 Pioneer.

Then Alayna Bailey struck.

Bailey received a pass from Sadie Cyr a few steps inside of the 18 in the middle of the box. She took one touch to settle it and set herself up for a clean left-footed shot. Bailey rifled the ball past the dive of Panthers goalie Kyler McClelland and into the goal to put Hopkins ahead 1-0 with five minutes remaining in the Western Mass. Class D quarterfinal round.

The Hawks held on in the final minutes – Bailey’s goal being the difference – to advance to the semifinals, where they will face No. 3 Palmer on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

“I’m very, very proud of them,” Hopkins head coach Vincent Catania said. “They kept it together mentally until the end and they didn’t break down on each other. We adapted and adjusted really well… In practice, we’ve been working on using our left foot to shoot more, and [Bailey] did a great job on her goal using her left.”

Pioneer head coach Matt Killeen and his Panthers team went to Hopkins’ regular season finale against Greenfield on Wednesday to scout the Golden Hawks knowing they would likely meet up in the opening round of the Western Mass. tournament. They saw that Hopkins had scored over 60 goals this year, and in Greenfield they saw just how lethal the offense can be.

So the Panthers packed it in, playing a 5-4-1 formation to make life harder for the Golden Hawks’ offense. Catania admitted the strategy worked following the game, but lauded his team’s ability to remain level-headed despite the good effort from Pioneer.

“We moved the ball around well and kept it in their end pretty much the entire game,” Catania said. “These are the games that are tricky, because they did an excellent job defending us. We just had to be patient. Patience is a virtue.”
