High schools: Belchertown, South Hadley girls set up Class B title-game showdown

The No. 4 Monument Mountain girls soccer team gave top-seeded Belchertown a run for its money in the Western Mass. Class B semifinals, but the Orioles buckled down and prevailed – battling to a 2-1 victory on their home field Tuesday night.
For the third time in four years, Belchertown will meet South Hadley in an all-Hampshire County sectional championship. They’ve each won one against each other, so it’ll be a rubber match later this week.
Madelyn Philpott and Morghan Litz scored for the Orioles, with Bri Ribeiro and Isabel Moreau recording assists. Goalie Jill Debarge came up clutch with four saves on five opportunities.
South Hadley and Belchertown played all the way back on Sept. 2 in both teams’ first matchup of the season. It ended in a 1-1 draw. The rematch for a Class B crown should be lots of fun.
No. 2 South Hadley 2, No. 3 Southwick 0 — Allison Fleury netted both Tigers goals as South Hadley defeated Southwick via shutout to advance to the Class B championship game, which it has done in every season of the new Western Mass. tournament.
Cara Dean made seven saves to earn the shutout, and now the Tigers will turn their attention to No. 1 Belchertown for a rematch of the 2022 Western Mass. final.
Class C semis
No. 1 Mount Greylock 2, No. 5 Smith Voc 0 — The Vikings were held scoreless in their semifinal match against the top seed in Class C.

Class D semis
No. 2 Hopkins 4, No. 3 Palmer 0 — The Golden Hawks found themselves in a tight match at the half (ahead 1-0), but a trio of second half goals propelled them past Palmer and into the Class D finals.
Maggie Potter, Sadie Cyr, Morgan Augustin and Aurora Moynihan were the Hopkins goal scorers while Alayna Bailey (two) and Cyr tallied assists. Emmy Schmidt made five saves to earn the shutout in net.
The Hawks will face No. 1 Granby in the title tilt.
Non-playoff games
Pittsfield 1, Easthampton 0 — Addie Barr made five saves in goal for Easthampton, which lost a close contest with Pittsfield on Tuesday afternoon.
Amherst 5, Wahconah 1 — Maddie Hockman put home four goals in a huge scoring outburst to lead the ‘Canes to an easy win over Wahconah on Tuesday.
Maeve Fitzgerald also tallied for Amherst while Aaliyah Hall recorded a dozen saves in the box.
Hampshire 5, Frontier 0 — The Raiders dominated in every facet on Tuesday, and Shayne Moynahan and Libby Puttick tallied two goals apiece to boost them to a shutout win over Frontier.
Addie Miklasiewicz netted the other goal while Moynahan (two), Olivia Whitaker and Libby Puttick dished out assists. Karaghan Rogalski made five saves for Hampshire and Aylyn Shaw recorded 14 for Frontier.
Ware 2, Smith Academy 0 — Madison Zononi stood tall in goal with nine saves, but Smith Academy couldn’t generate any offense on Tuesday afternoon.
The Falcons’ season ended with a 7-9-2 record.
Mahar 2, Gateway 1 — The Senators saved their best for last as they picked up their first win of the season in the finale.
The Gators scored a goal but it wasn’t enough to match Mahar’s pair.
Non-playoff games
Taconic 6, Easthampton 1 — Dylan Gonzalez and Fred Cudjoe each scored twice for Taconic as the Eagles struggled agains the speed of the Thunder in a 6-1 loss on Tuesday.
Easthampton will now turn its attention to the Division 4 state tournament.
South Hadley 1, Frontier 1 — The Tigers and Redhawks battled to a draw on Tuesday, with each team playing one consolation game before they try their hands at the Division 4 state tournament.
Jack Chagnon (goal) and Carlos David (assist) recorded points for South Hadley while Ian Paciorek (goal) and Max Millette (assist) tallied points for Frontier.
Westfield 4, Holyoke 3 — Goals were common on between the Purple Knights and Bombers on Tuesday, as a whopping seven were scored in the Westfield win.
Holyoke ended its season 2-13-2.
Hoosac Valley 2, Gateway 1 — Dylan Rohlfs netted both Hurricanes goals and it ended up being all they needed as the Gators fell 2-1 on Tuesday.
Theo DeAngelis-Page scored for Gateway while Zack Hess recorded six saves in the box.
