After a competitive and scoreless first half between the Hopkins Academy and Granby boys soccer teams, the visiting Rams finally broke through with a goal late in the second half.

Riley Goodhind received a pass from Jaxton Roy and found the back of the net to put Granby in front, 1-0. Most of the game was played in the middle third of the field and such was the case after Goodhind’s goal, as one tally was all the Rams would need in a 1-0 win over the Golden Hawks on Wednesday afternoon in Hadley.

Back on Sept. 18, almost exactly a month ago, Granby cruised to a 3-0 win over Hopkins at home. The much closer score and evenly played contest this time around speaks to the Golden Hawks’ growth throughout the year.

In goal, Rams keeper Daniel Santiago earned the shutout victory with two saves while Hopkins goalie Logan Bye grabbed four saves on five attempts.

Smith Vocational 5, Pathfinder 0 — Cameron Ball erupted for four goals as the Vikings pulled away with a convincing win on Wednesday.

Jack Corey also netted a goal for Smith Voc while Josh Cole tallied a pair of assists.

Smith Academy 4, Mount Everett 0 — The Falcons got two goals and an assist from star Cajun Benson as the shutout win officially punched their ticket to the state tournament.

Matt Scagel recorded a goal and an assist and Cam Graves buried an unassisted goal with five minutes to go. Jake Wilcox made five saves for Smith Academy.

East Longmeadow 5, Amherst 2 — Adbi Byl-Brann and Daniel Nunez Saravia scored the goals for the ‘Canes on Wednesday.

The Spartans’ five goals were too much for Amherst to keep pace with in the loss.

Pioneer 4, Gateway 0 — Judah Glenn put up a hat trick for the Panthers and it was too much for the Gators to overcome.

Zack Hess (nine) and Eli Chepurenko (three) combined for a dozen saves in the box for Gateway.

Belchertown 1, Minnechaug 1 — Joseph Yoon scored in the second half to help the Orioles to a 1-1 draw with the Falcons on Wednesday. Kamden Houle tallied the assist.

Jack Mandeville made three saves in the box for Belchertown.

Chicopee 3, Northampton 0 — The Blue Devils were overwhelmed by the Pacers on Wednesday and couldn’t find a way on the score sheet in a shutout loss.

Northampton’s Salem Gregory made six saves in goal.

Girls soccer

Amherst 2, Granby 1 — A pair of goals from Maddie Hockman, including the game-winner in the second half, propelled the ‘Canes to a win over the Rams on Wednesday. Neena Chinnappa and Meave Fitzgerald recorded assists.

Granby’s Molly Zumbruski put home the Rams’ lone goal, finding the net in the second half. Meredith Bartosz saved nine shots for Granby.

Field hockey

Frontier 2, Westfield 0 — Addie Harrington and Ashlie Galenski finished with the goals in the Redhawks’ shutout against the Bombers on Wednesday in Westfield. 

Ashley Taylor and Addie Harrington provided the assists while Kyra Richards saved the lone shot she faced for Frontier.

Cross country

Gateway 17, St. Mary’s 44; Gateway 17, Palmer 44 (girls) — The Gators improved to 11-2 and 7-1 in the Pioneer South with two decisive wins on Wednesday.

Gateway’s Anya Niles (22:34) won the race easily while Ava Christie (second, 23:38), Laurel DeMoss (third, 23:42) and Lily Peloquin (fifth, 26:11) all turned in strong performances as well.

PVCICS 15, McCann Tech 50; PVCICS 16, Easthampton 47 (boys) & PVCICS 15, McCann Tech 48; PVCICS 17 Easthampton 42 (girls) — It was a dominating performance from the Dragons, sweeping Easthampton and McCann Tech in their final meet of the regular season. PVCICS finishes 30-2 overall on the season, with the girls going 14-2 (6-2 in Pioneer North), and the boys capping off an undefeated season as Pioneer North champions at 16-0 (8-0 league).

The boys took nine of the top 10 behind Grafton Tolopko’s first-place finish of 18:05. Owen Bauman (18:10) took second, RJ Allen (18:44) finished third, Asa Taggert (18:48) grabbed fourth and Kristof Knyt (19:23) earned sixth.

The girls placed six in the top 10, with Sarah Fardal (21:36) in first, Ella Maier (21:51) in second, Eunice Lo (22:04) in third, Astrid Knyt (22:25) grabbing fifth and Emma Vasovic (22:59) taking sixth.

Girls soccer

Easthampton 5, Central 0 — Raegan Delisle, Liv O’Neill and Samone Young each scored first-half goals to give the Eagles a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

Easthampton only added to it with Arie Kuchyt scoring twice over the final 40 mintues. Addie Barr made one save in goal to secure the Eagles shutout.

Girls cross country

Hampshire 15, Southwick 50; Hampshire 15, Hopkins 50; Hampshire 15, Pioneer 50 — Kathleen Barry set a new course record at Southwick with a time of 20:06 to help the Raiders sweep all three of their meets and clinch the Pioneer South with an unblemished 9-0 record..

Ada Corner (third, 21:05), Alex Henrichon (fourth, 21:41) and Charlotte Niswonger (fifth, 22:24) all cracked the top five for Hampshire while Hopkins’ Caprial DiBartelomeo grabbed second with a time of 21:00.

Boys cross country

Hampshire 19, Southwick 42; Hampshire 15, Hopkins 50; Hampshire 15, Pioneer 50 — Oscar Schiff also set a course record at Southwick, as his time of 17:23 grabbed first place by more than 30 seconds. With Tuesday’s wins, Hampshire wrapped up its 18-0 season including 9-0 league record to clinch the Pioneer South.

Owen Cubi (third, 17:55), Jack  Laliberte (fourth, 18:06) and Aidan Conklin (fifth, 18:07) turned in strong races for the Raiders.
