EASTHAMPTON — The Smith Vocational senior class combined for four touchdowns as the Vikings blitzed Pathfinder, 40-8, Friday at Mountain View Middle School.
“The senior class has been here all four years, and we really wanted it,” running back Jared Baer said. “We’ve worked hard.”
The senior night victory allowed Smith Vocational (5-2, 4-1 Tri-County) to claim a share of the league title. Springfield International beat Monument Mountain, 54-52, in Wilbraham late Friday night. Monument and Springfield International also finished 4-1 in the league to make for a three-way tie.
The win also put the Vikings in position to qualify for the State Vocational Football Tournament. Details will be announced this weekend.
“The senior class is a huge reason why this program has turned around,” Smith Vocation coach Alex Subocz said. “They’ve had the right attitude for four years. A kid like Jared Baer has played for four years. He’s grinded through some bad seasons and now as an upperclassman the last two years he’s getting a lot of wins.”
Baer’s career night paced the Vikings. The running back finished with 157-yards rushing on 14 carries. He had 125 yards in the first half along with both of his touchdowns.
“That’s always the goal to set the tone early,” Baer said. “It kills the energy of the other team.”
Senior quarterback Ty Chapdelaine rushed for a touchdown and threw one to classmate John Majewski. Chapdelaine’s third-quarter 11-yard TD run with 56 seconds left gave the Vikings a 40-0 lead.

Senior captain John Loiko punched in the conversion run on the final touchdown. Baer had two conversion runs, while sophomore Brayden LaRose (one rushing TD) and Chapdelaine each had one conversion.
Bryan Leyton, Baer, Loiko and Chapdelaine patiently ran behind strong blocks up front from senior Wyatt Evans, senior Dewey Hathaway, junior Aiden “Beast” Houle, junior LJ Hale and sophomore Colin Paschal. The backfield, including Chapdelaine, combined for 12 runs of at least 10 yards.
“The six of them open up holes,” said Subocz, who added wing Michael Theriault to the group. “They understand the concept of the gap scheme that we do.”
The line also paved the way on defense. The unit limited Pathfinder’s big back Tyler Rondeau and kept quarterback Anthony Arventos from scrambling. Pathfinder (2-6, 2-3) scored its lone touchdown with about six minutes left in the game.
Loiko recovered a fumble, while Jameson Tobin had an interception. Special teams blocked a punt.
“Coach always says 24 hours to enjoy the win and back to work on Monday,” Baer said.
